Six More Weeks Of Winter!?

Punxsutawney Phil

LA Times

Punxsutawney Phil stepped out onto the Gobblers Knob and saw his shadow!! Can this really mean six more weeks of winter?? Get the full story of what happened after the jump!

As people gathered around Punxsutawney Phil this morning on the Gobblers Knob, the great seer that see’s all apparently saw his shadow this morning! But, does this little guy really see six more weeks of winter?! I think our fifty degree weather begs to differ. But who can argue with thousands of years of groundhog tradition?!?

AccuWeather.com reports since the tradition of Groundhog Day began in Punxsutawney in 1886. Phil has seen his shadow, on record, 99 times. There were 16 times that he did not see his shadow, and nine years during the late 1800s that there is no record of Phil’s forecast. Although things might seem crazy, anticipating that the sight of his shadow determines a longer winter, while no shadow calls for an early spring — he has a tendency to get it right. Because the year’s coldest quarter, also known as meteorological winter, runs from Dec. 5 to March 5, Phil’s accuracy in predicting a longer winter is about 80 percent. Well if statistics say that it’s possible for more snow, I’d better enjoy this lovely spring weather before winter returns for round two!!
